The Sioux called the land Makoshika... ...the bad lands. A mile from Glendive is 11,500 acres of primitive terrain where dinosaurs once roamed--Makoshika State Park. Today it belongs to the eagles, turkey vultures, and deer who forage through the canyons, crags and unique gumbo cap rocks that form the pristine skyline. To see a sky bigger than all outdoors, drive, hike, or bike through the park, where fossils are found. Established trails, interpretive signs, campgrounds, picnic areas and an archery range welcome guests to the park. The Visitors Center, where a triceratops skull found in the park now makes his home, takes you on a paleontology journey back to dinosaur days. Glendive is known as the Paddlefish and Caviar Capital. Paddlefish provide sportsmen with a thrilling adventure and delectable fish. Paddlefish average about 55 pounds and must be snagged with heavy duty rods and reels. Glendive is a great place for fishermen to experience the rigors of deep sea fishing on an inland game fish. Paddlefish roe is donated to the Yellowstone Caviar Project for processing into caviar to benefit regional recreational projects. Visitors might see a working cattle drive or rodeo and relive the old west. Take an evening stroll to the gazebo in Our Park in downtown Glendive. Great lodging and camping offer you time to explore. Take a delightful walking tour of the downtown historic district, the Bell Street Bridge, or along the Yellowstone River. |
