Campfire Program – “Art & Science in the Yellowstone River Country during the Fur Trade” Fred MacVaugh will talk about Art & Science during the fur trade. When you think of a national park, what comes to mind first? Mountains or plains? Growing up in the Mid-Atlantic states, I thought of Yellowstone National Park, of course. And I'd guess that's what most Americans first imagine. It wasn't until I moved into Yellowstone Country that I discovered how mistaken I was. The national park idea didn't originate in the Rocky Mountains that form the source of the headwaters of the Yellowstone River. No. It was the prairielands at the river's mouth. How did that come to pass? Join Fred for this program, and he will share not only the story of the artists and artwork that inspired creation of our Nation's parks but also some stories about the origins of vertebrate paleontology in the American West and our country's second most common state bird.
