From the late Cretaceous to the late Cenozoic frequent and continual change and deep time not only affected individual plants and animals that once called the region home but also the region in its entirety changed multiple times over the millennia. Ecological changes contributed to the character of the basin as we know it today and has continued in our own part of the story in the ever-changing formation of the badlands.
